About November
November – the last month of autumn, the 11th month of the year, the month of Indian Summer, Thanksgiving and the beginning of the Christmas season, the month of storm clouds darkening the sky and impressive rainfalls, the month of the first snow after a warm summer and a golden autumn. November – the month that embraces you in warmth and leaves you in the freezing cold, the month that personally affects me the most, the month of my birth, of many emotions, blessings and extreme loss. This album is a personal collection of memories and landscapes of growing up in the Blue Ridge Mountain region of Northern Virginia and a small farming community in rural Upstate New York. These songs are images and observations of my personal experiences of autumn, particularly November. Behind every song is a story, behind every story an emotion. Some are good memories, others are emotionally difficult. But that is life – and these songs are my life. I hope they bring you something that you can connect with – be it a journey of joy or melancholy.

The album won a silver medal for outstanding achievements at the GLOBAL MUSIC AWARDS in spring 2019. Artists and composers with outstanding emotional communcation, the abilitiy to transcend, who can make the listener exeperience something new and compelling, who can surprise and move an audience and transfer musical joy are honored with this award.
In the fall 2019 the album was honored best album in the category “New Age” at the Clouzine International Music Awards.

The album is titled “November” because the month of November has a special meaning in Casey’s life: November is not only the month in which Casey was born but many significant events of Casey’s life took place in November. Most songs are connected with special memories of that particular time of the year, e.g. “Indian Summer” or “Thanksgiving”.
The album features a collection of songs mostly inspired by landscapes and childhood/young adult memories of Casey growing up in the Blue Ridge Mountain region of Northern Virginia and a small farming community in Upstate New York. Behind every song is a memory and behind every memory is an emotion. Some memories are good memories, others are emotionally difficult. But this is life and these songs are Casey’s life. He hopes they bring the listeners something they can connect with – be it a journey of joy or melancholy.
1) Marlogue Wood
The first song on the album – “Marlogue Wood” – has a special connection with the album cover picture and especially with the picture on the back cover of the CD and the picture on the CD itself. Casey lived for a while in Ireland and visited Marlogue Woods himself a couple of times. He was fascinated with the mystical beauty of this wood. When looking for a cover picture, he came across this very cover picture online and made his manager search for the photographer. After a couple of hours of research, Casey’s manager found the picture and the Irish photographer Bernie Carney on Facebook.
On Bernie’s Facebook page was a moving and beautifully written tribute to her dog Ruby, who had died recently with a picture of Ruby on the same trail as the cover picture. As an animal lover and cat owner, Casey was touched by Bernie’s words about the loss of her beloved dog. Ruby graces now the back cover of the album and the CD. Besides that, Casey donates parts of the proceeds of “November” to animal charity. He named his animal charity activities after Ruby: The Ruby Fund.
The song was nominated for a Peace Song award in the category "Acoustic Contemporary”.
2) Listen To The Sweet Song Of The River
The second song on the album is titled “Listen To The Sweet Song Of The River”. This song represents Casey’s desire to be able to, not only hear, but “listen” to the important things in life. Not just to look but also to see.

The third song “November” reflects the particularities and moods of a month that embraces you in warmth and leaves you in the cold.
4) Indian Summer / 5) The Time Of Silence / 6) Thanksgiving
The three songs – “Indian Summer”, “The Time Of Silence” and “Thanksgiving” – are also strongly connected with the month November: “Indian Summer” is a period of an unusually warm and dry weather situation in November in Northern America. “The Time Of Silence” is about extreme loss and learning how to bear the sadness of tragedy. “Thanksgiving” refers to the national holiday celebrating the blessings of the harvest and of the preceding year. All three songs capture Casey’s personal feelings and experiences during this time of the year.

7) The Whisper That Shatters The Silence
“The Whisper That Shatters The Silence” is a powerful song about the calm before the storm or the pastoral solitude when it is over, a simple gesture of goodwill that can end or dramatically improve tension, sometimes years long tension in a relationship.
8) Hymn
The song “Hymn” is inspired by the prayer meetings on Wednesday night in Casey’s father’s and uncle’s churches when the believers would meet to pray and sing together. In contrast to the Sunday services, which were often an intense experience, Wednesday were when people lifted each other up in prayers and songs.
9) Chasing Fireflies
As a young child growing up in the Blue Ridge Mountain region of Northern Virginia, it was a common event between Casey and his older brother to try to capture fireflies in glass jars as the sun set. Being only 4 or 5 years old, you can imagine how magical it must have been for a young boy to see his brother catch these flying creatures in a jar and stare in wonder at how they lit up the night. Sometimes his brother let Casey carry the jar through the forrest before letting them go free. Sometimes Casey got lucky and caught his own and his brother then would exaggerate his level of skill and stealth and hunting technique to their parents on arriving home. It’s the first time Casey remembers feeling a sense of accomplishment. The magical wonder of creation and nature and the eternal bond between brothers – both so easily taken for granted and yet both so easily lost. Surely on Smith Mountain road, Lynchburg, Virginia, even now, those fireflies are putting on their show for free to an enraptured child. The song “Chasing Fireflies” is about this memory of Casey. Reviewers say that the nostalgic yet hopeful song perfectly captures the flying fireflies and the innocence of a time long since passed.
10) The Shadows That Surround Us
November in upstate New York is renowned for the storm clouds which darken every corner followed by impressive rain storms. The approaching clouds creating the shadows that don’t seem to leave, continually getting darker: “The Shadows That Surround Us” – until it is over and the sun returns. These images also symbolize the struggle one may have with depression and the constant fight to escape darkness.
11) Evening Prayer
“Evening Prayer” - the final blessing of a gathering of the faithful.
12) Guetnachtgschichtli
“Guetnachtgschichtli” is Swiss German for bedtime story. The song captures the atmosphere of an evening on top of a mountain surrounded by fresh air, only the sound of the cow bells ringing through the stillness of a peaceful night.
13) A Fond Farewell
“A Fond Farewell” is a tribute to the end of a beautiful season as well as a tribute to those we admire but are no longer with us yet remain in our hearts and minds forever.
Die Geschichten zu den einzelnen Stücken
Das Album “November” trägt diesen Titel, weil der Monat November eine spezielle Bedeutung in Caseys Leben hat: Der November ist nicht nur Caseys Geburtsmonat, auch viele bedeutende Ereignisse in seinem Leben geschahen in diesem Monat. Viele Stücke sind mit speziellen Erinnerungen an diesen Monat verbunden, wie etwa “Indian Summer” oder “Thanksgiving.
Das Album ist eine Sammlung von Liedern die Inspiration an Landschaften und Kindheitserinnerungen von Casey finden, der in den Blue Ridge Mountains und in einer ländlichen Gemeinde in Upstate NY aufgewachsen ist. Hinter jedem Stück steht eine Erinnerung, hinter jeder Erinnerung eine Emotion. Manche Erinnerungen sind gute Erinnerungen, andere sind emotional schwierig. Aber das ist das Leben und diese Lieder sind Caseys Leben. Hoffentliche bringen sie den Hörerinnen und Hörer etwas, mit dem sie sich identifizieren können - Freude oder Melancholie.
1) Marlogue Wood
Das erste Stück auf dem Album “Marlogue Wood” hat eine spezielle Verbindung zum Coverbild und dem Bild auf der Rückseite der CD sowie der CD selber. Casey hat eine Zeit lang in Irland gelebt und besuchte Marlogue Woods einige Male. Er war fasziniert von der mystischen Schönheit des Waldes. Als Casey nach einem Coverbild suchte für die CD suchte, fand er online genau dieses Bild und liess seine Managerin nach der Fotografin des Bildes suchen. Seine Managerin fand nach intensiver Suche die irische Fotografin Bernie Carney auf Facebook.
Auf Bernies Facebookseite stand ein berührender und wunderschöner Text geschrieben von Bernie über ihre Hündin Ruby, welche auf dem Weg in Marlogue Woods sitzend nun die Rückseite der CD und diese selber ziert. Als Tier- und Katzenliebhaber war Casey tief berührt von Bernies Worten über den Verlust ihrer geliebten Hündin. Einen Teil des Erlöses aus dem Verkauf von “November” fliesst in den “Ruby Fund”, benannte nach der Hündin der Fotografin des Coverbildes und dem Hund auf der CD und der Rückseite des Covers.
Das Stück war für einen Peace Song Award in der Kategorie “Acoustic Contemporary” nominiert.
2) Listen To The Sweet Song Of The River
Das zweite Stück auf dem Album drückt Caseys Wunsch aus, bewusst durchs Leben zu gehen - nicht nur zu hören aber auch zuzuhören, nicht nur zu sehen, sondern auch bewusst wahrzunehmen.

Das dritte Stück “November” fängt die Stimmungen und Besonderheiten des Monats ein, der dich mit Wärme empfängt und in eisiger Kälte verlässt.
4) Indian Summer / The Time Of Silence / 6) Thanksgiving
Die drei Stücke “Indian Summer”, “The Time Of Silence” und “Thanksgiving” nehmen ebenfalls Bezug auf den November. Unter “Indian Summer” versteht man eine warm und trockene Wetterlage im November in Nordamerika. “The Time Of Silence” handelt von Schmerz und Traurigkeit nach Tragödien und Verlusten. “Thanksgiving” bezieht sich auf den gleichnamigen Feiertag - ein Erntedankfest, dass in den USA und in Kanada jeweils Ende November gefeiert wird. Alle Stücke fangen Caseys persönliche Gefühle und Erfahrungen dieser Jahreszeit ein.

7) The Whisper That Shatters The Silence
Dieses gewaltige Stück handelt von der Ruhe vor dem Sturm, der friedlichen Stille wenn alles vorbei ist, einer simplen Geste des Wohlwollens, welche die Macht hat, zwischenmenschliche Spannungen zu - auch jahrelange - zu verbessern oder gar zu lösen.
8) Hymn
Das Lied “Hymn” ist inspiriert an den mittwöchlichen Abendgottesdiensten in der Kirchen von Caseys Vater und Onkel. Die Gläubigen trafen sich und beteten und sangen zusammen. Im Gegensatz zu den Gottesdiensten am Sonntag, welche oft eine anstrengende Angelegenheit waren, waren diese Mittwochsgottesdienste eine positive Erfahrung.
9) Chasing Fireflies
Als Casey als kleines Kind mit seiner Familie noch in den Blue Ridge Mountains lebte ging er oft mit seinem älteren Bruder bei Sonnenuntergang auf Glühwürmchen-Jagd: Sie fingen die Glühwürmchen ein und beobachteten das Leuchten der Insekten in einem grossen Marmeladenglas. Oft liess ihn sein grosser Bruder das Glas durch die Dunkelheit des Waldes tragen bevor sie die Glühwürmchen wieder freiliessen. Manchmal gelang es Casey auch ein Glühwürmchen zu fangen und sein Bruder übertrieb zu Hause dann seine Jagd-Technik und seine Fähigkeiten bei den Eltern. Es war das erste Mal, dass Casey ein Gefühl von Stolz verspürte. Der Zauber der Schöpfung und die ewige Verbindung zwischen Brüdern: Oft halten wir diese für selbstverständlich, bis wir sie verlieren. Sicher entzücken auch noch heute die Glühwürmchen auf der Smith Mountain Road in Lynchburg, Virginia verzauberte Kinder mit ihrem Tanz. Das Lied „Chasing Fireflies“ erinnert Casey an die Zeit, die er mit seinem Bruder beim Glühwürmchen-Fangen verbrachte. Kritiker sagen, dass dieses nostalgische aber trotzdem hoffnungsvolle Lied perfekt den Flug der Glühwürmchen sowie die Unschuld längst vergangener Zeiten wiedergibt.
10) The Shadows That Surround Us
Der Monat November in Upstate New York ist bekannt für seine Sturmwolken, die jeden Winkel verdunklen, gefolgt von eindrücklichen Regenschauern. Die herannahenden Wolken kreieren Schatten, die scheinbar nicht mehr verschwinden und immer dunkler werden: Die Schatten, die uns um ringen – bis alles vorbei ist und die Sonne zurückkommt. Die gleichen Bilder können auch den Kampf gegen dunkle Zeiten symbolisieren.
11) Evening Prayer
Abendgebet – die letzte Segnung einer Versammlung von Gläubigen.
12) Guetnachtgschichtli
Das Lied fängt die Atmosphäre eines Abends hoch in den Bergen ein, umgeben von frischer Luft und dem Klang der Kuhglocken, welche die Stille einer friedlichen Nacht durchbricht.
13) A Fond Farewell
“A Fond Farewell” zollt sowohl dem Abschluss einer wunderschönen Jahreszeit Tribut als auch denjenigen Menschen, die nicht mehr bei uns sind, jedoch in unseren Herzen und Erinnerungen für immer weiter leben.
